How to make artificial rock

The experience of avoiding boring and monotonous rock walls to make artificial rock shows us that the most important thing is to use your imagination to design and avoid monotonous and odorless rock walls!

With little prior planning, you can concentrate the diversity of natural rock formations on small, self-made artificial rock farms.

Don't just lock a pile of rocks onto a vertical rock wall and call it your rock field. why? Just a few weeks later, you will feel that all the movements are almost identical - because you are always climbing in the same vertical plane. In order to increase the challenge, you can only try to catch more distant points, or painfully pinch smaller points (wounding your fingers soon).

Having a simple three-dimensional shape of your rock wall can make your climbing movement more varied and more fun. In the example of Fig. 1, the rock field has vertical surfaces, double angled overhangs, internal angles, and external angles. You can also try some curved or inverted ladders. Of course, this style will be more difficult than making a vertical wall, but after doing a good job, you will find that these extra time and money are definitely worth the investment.

Note: We only provide some design concepts for self-made artificial rock sites for your reference. We do not provide detailed construction design and procedures. You must consult with professional engineers to determine the bearing capacity and safety of the building and rock structure.
A common problem with the configuration of the four-pin nail is: "How should the four-foot nail be distributed?" The first thing to remember is to install the four-pin nail before locking the plywood to the structure. We propose to use a "random" grid pattern, which is to draw grid lines on the plywood (at least 30 four-legged nails per plywood), but do not drill just at the intersection of the grid lines, but at the cross Randomly drill a 1/2 inch hole in the 10 cm circle of the spot. This can be evenly distributed and avoids too monotonous arrangements.

Rock block installation
The Metolius rock blocks are suitable for 3/8 inch Allen screws and 3/8 inch four pin nails. The four-legged nail is knocked from the back of the rock plate, and then the rock block is locked by the front face (see picture). So if you just loosen the screw, you can easily change the angle of the rock (such as pulling it from the front to the back) and lock it. Be careful not to over-tighten the rock block, usually depending on the size of the block, and only require 2-4 ft./lbs. of torque.

Rock selection
Metolius boasts more than 400 rock blocks of different sizes, shapes and styles, allowing you to design rock walls and training courses tailored to your individual needs based on your strengths and weaknesses.

How many rock blocks do you need for your rock? The number of rock blocks is of course based on personal preferences and economic capabilities. At the beginning, each piece of plywood can be preceded by 15 to 20 rock blocks and gradually added. Don't forget to hit twice the number of quadrupeds first.

The size of the rock block is determined by the size of the rock wall and the ability of the climber. Physical climbers are able to hold small rocks at large angles of rock. In general, however, it is recommended that most of them are medium-sized blocks (Modulars), some large blocks (Macros) are used for large-angle rock faces, and some small blocks (Micros) are used to increase the challenge.

Also remember that there are a considerable number of feet (about 1/4 of the number) scattered on the rock surface. These include the smallest Micros and specialized footholds.

If you are pursuing the diversity of rock blocks, Metolius is divided into five categories according to rock size: Micros, Modulars, Mini Jugs, Macros, and Insets. At the same time, the design team led by the famous Jim Karn also constantly seeks to update the shape of the rock blocks. According to the design style is divided into Naturals, All American, Flow Stone, Substance, Sessions, Powerline and other six series.

The figure on the right shows an example of a rock formation with a wooden structure and a rock face. The Metolius rock block and four-legged nails are also scattered in place.
