Weekend production: 3D printing a fun rubber band machine gun

Kirby Downey is a prop designer from South Africa who currently lives in London. In his spare time, he also likes to 3D print some toy weapons and the like. We have previously reported on some of his 3D prints, such as the Thunderlord in the 3D printing popular game Destiny, and the gold handgun Thorn.

Today, after a few months of calm, Downey has brought us a wonderful 3D printing project, this time a more fun rubber band machine gun. According to him, the project was inspired by another, more complex rubber band gun. "I saw it on Youtube, but it was driven by a motor. So I wanted to build a fully mechanical rubber band gun without any electronics so that anyone could make it." claim.

So, he spent about a week using SolidWorks software to design a rubber band machine gun that looked very gorgeous. “I spent a lot of time in Solidworks doing virtual assembly testing, which helps to determine if it works effectively before 3D printing to avoid material waste. In actual printing, each part is about 3D printed 4 8 hours," he said. According to Tiangong, this rubber band gun has three M5 threaded rods and two M5 nuts. All 25 parts are all 3D printed. However, these parts are easy to print in 3D, and it doesn't require much cleaning and assembly. The parts are almost all connected by interlocking. He said. Glue is not required, but using a little helps you to combine all the parts together.

Looks great? It is more fun to use. The most interesting part of it is its launching mechanism. You need to wrap a piece of rope around each part and then attach a rubber band to it at once, which takes a lot of time, but it's worth it. Finally, each rubber band is mounted on this long rope. You just need to turn the device. As the rope is slowly rolled up, the rubber bands will be fired one by one until the rubber is the most The ribs are all shot, and the whole rope is also wrapped in place. Then you can start the next round of winding the rope and loading the rubber band bullets. This is a very clever system, you can put more than a dozen "rubber band bullets" at a time.

In view, this is indeed a very good 3D printing project, especially since it is almost 100% done by 3D printing. Now it's the weekend, if you 3D print something to kill time, try it! (Click here to download all STL files for free).
