Dear Packaging Doctor,
I oversee several parking lots in my city, including maintaining and repairing the ticket machines. Right now, I'm dealing with an issue where rainwater keeps seeping into the machines, causing the tickets to come out damp. Unfortunately, we don't have enough funds to replace the entire machines—do you have any suggestions for preventing moisture damage? Thanks, Ian
Hi Ian,
You've encountered quite the challenge, but this isn't unfamiliar territory for me. Many of my clients face similar issues with their packaging letting moisture in. The easiest fix might be to insert silica gel packets inside the machines. These little pouches absorb excess moisture, keeping your ticket paper nice and dry. As a general rule, we suggest using about 5 grams of silica gel for every cubic foot of space within the machine.
However, if you suspect the machines themselves are allowing water to enter, consider wrapping them in a protective layer. Heat shrink wrap made of polythene works great and can either be purchased on rolls or in pre-cut covers for larger items like pallets. This material is light, waterproof, and allows users to access the buttons since it fits snugly around the machine. You'll just need to cut openings for the coin slot and ticket dispenser. Applying the shrink wrap requires a heat gun, and there are plenty of tutorials online demonstrating how to use one effectively—but make sure you’re near a power source when doing so.
Best regards, The Packaging Doctor

It's always fascinating to see how seemingly unrelated industries face similar challenges when it comes to preserving their products. Whether it's keeping tickets dry in parking meters or ensuring food stays fresh during transport, the principles of packaging remain consistent. If you're ever unsure about how best to protect your goods, don't hesitate to seek professional advice—it could save you time, money, and frustration down the line. And remember, sometimes the simplest solutions, like silica gel or shrink wrap, can make a world of difference!
