Introducing Kumulo – Secto Design’s Grand New Pendant Lamp

What would a fluffy cumulus cloud look like as a wooden lamp? Or what if the snow-crowned fir trees of Lapland were transformed into elegant, shimmering sculptures? These were the visions that sparked the creation of Kumulo, the latest masterpiece from Secto Design. Inspired by nature’s delicate beauty, architect Seppo Koho found his muse in the snowy forests of Lapland and the endless summer skies filled with clouds. His journey to design Kumulo began during a husky safari, where he first imagined how the layered structure of snow-covered trees could translate into a lighting design. “Kumulo is a tribute to both the softness of a cloud and the quiet strength of a tree,” Seppo explains. “I designed it last summer, and the sky full of drifting clouds was a constant source of inspiration.” Seppo has been behind all 30 of Secto Design’s lamp models, each reflecting his signature Scandinavian aesthetic—clean lines, minimalism, and a deep respect for craftsmanship. But Kumulo stands out as one of the most complex designs he's ever created. “I make all the prototypes myself in my workshop,” he says. “But turning a concept into mass production requires new tools and techniques. For Kumulo, we had to develop a unique manufacturing process to capture its undulating form.” The lamp is crafted from premium Finnish PEFC-certified birch, ensuring sustainable forestry practices. Each piece is handcrafted in Secto Design’s factory in Heinola, Finland, making every lamp a true work of art. “Even the smallest detail matters,” Seppo adds. “With a minimalist design, there’s no room for error. Everything must be precise and perfect.” Kumulo’s design is not only visually striking but also highly functional. It brings warm, soft light that complements the natural tones of the wood. Whether placed alone or in groups, it can transform any space—be it a private home, a restaurant, or a lobby. “It has an animated quality, like a cloud shifting in the sky,” Seppo notes. “It’s not just a lamp; it’s a statement.” The design also considers the lamp’s presence when it’s off. “A good light fixture should be beautiful even without illumination,” he says. “When the light comes on, it becomes alive, casting subtle shadows and creating a dynamic atmosphere.” Seppo hopes that the carpenters at Secto Design will enjoy working on Kumulo as much as he enjoyed designing it. “It’s important that the people who build the lamps feel proud of their work,” he says.
