How to Pack Sculptures – The Packaging Doctor

By Carl Board • Sunday 15th July 2018

At Kite Packaging, we understand that protecting your goods during transit is crucial to maintaining customer satisfaction. When it comes to large and delicate items like sculptures, the challenge of safe packaging becomes even greater. That’s where the Packaging Doctor steps in—offering expert advice to help you avoid damage and ensure your products arrive in perfect condition.

Dear Doctor,
I’m a UK-based art trader who frequently ships large steel sculptures, typically around 4 meters tall. Right now, I’m using polypropylene strapping for packing, but some customers have reported damage upon arrival. What can I do to prevent this?

Thanks,
Lee

Hi Lee,

Thank you for reaching out to the Packaging Doctor. It sounds like you're on the right track with your outer packaging, but there's definitely room for improvement when it comes to internal protection. To ensure your sculptures arrive undamaged, you need a combination of both interior and exterior packaging solutions.

First up, consider using our range of cushioning foams. These are designed to hold your sculptures securely in place and absorb shocks that may occur during transport. We offer foam sheets that wrap around the sculpture and self-adhesive foam blocks that prevent friction from the outer packaging. This adds an extra layer of safety and stability.

Next, we recommend using clear polythene sheeting. It's an excellent choice for larger, bulkier items as it provides a waterproof barrier against moisture, dust, and dirt. You can choose from various thicknesses—light, medium, heavy, or extra heavy duty—depending on how much protection your sculptures require.

Finally, don’t underestimate the importance of strong strapping. While polypropylene is commonly used, it may not be sufficient for heavy and large items like your sculptures. Instead, switch to steel strapping, which offers superior strength and reliability. Using steel straps to secure your sculptures to pallets will make sure they stay in place throughout the journey.

By combining these elements—foam padding, polythene wrapping, and steel strapping—you’ll create a comprehensive protective system that minimizes the risk of damage. If you follow these steps, you should see a significant reduction in customer complaints.

Best wishes,
The Packaging Doctor
