Packaging for a Butcher – The Packaging Doctor

By Carl Board • Friday 1st April 2016

April has officially arrived, and time seems to be flying by. At Kite, we're always here to help our customers find the perfect packaging solutions. We’ve just returned from a lovely Easter break, feeling refreshed and ready to provide you with expert advice and innovative packaging ideas.

Today in the Surgery, we met with a local butcher who is looking for an alternative to her current packaging setup. She currently uses polystyrene boxes inside grey mailing bags, but her courier has told her this isn’t acceptable anymore. She needs a new solution that meets their guidelines and allows for clear labeling for the courier.

Dear Doctor,

Could you please help me find a suitable packaging solution? Right now, I use polystyrene boxes and place them inside grey mailing bags. However, my courier has informed me that they won’t accept this type of packaging. I need a new option that works with their requirements. The dimensions of the containers are 400 x 300 x 160 mm and 400 x 300 x 280 mm. I also need to label the packed items clearly so the courier can identify them easily.

Thank you,

Katrina

Hi Katrina,

Thanks for reaching out today. It's completely understandable how easy it is to get stuck in a routine when using certain packaging materials. But don't worry — that's exactly why we’re here to help!

Grey mailing bags are a great, cost-effective option for sending goods, but I understand you need something more suitable for your courier’s guidelines. Let me suggest a few options that could work for you.

First, I’d like to recommend our BDCM 4 cardboard box. This is a high-quality single-wall box with a write-on panel, which makes it ideal for labeling directly on the box. It’s durable and will protect your products during transit. However, if you find that the fit is too tight for your items, we can send over a sample of our 16 x 16 x 16 inch double-wall box. These are stronger and better suited for heavier items or when stacking is required. Plus, the height can be adjusted down to 305mm, which helps save space.

We also recommend adding handling labels and document wallets to ensure everything is clearly marked and avoids any confusion at the courier’s end.

If the double-wall box is the better choice, you might want to consider filling any empty space with a void fill material. Our Speed-Man box is a great low-cost, ready-to-use paper void fill system that’s easy to store and apply.

That’s it for now! We hope this helps you find the right packaging solution. If you have any more questions, feel free to reach out.

Best regards,

The Packaging Doctor
