Asian pears under fiery mahogany: mahogany in the post-redwoods

Yahuali, once you hear the name, you might sense it's not a high-end or serious wood. It sounds more like a "second-rate" product. Understanding the market, it's clear that this isn't yet a chance to "upgrade." In China's national standard for "Redwood," there is no official mention of "Asian Pear." Instead, woods that belong to the rosewood family but don't meet quality standards are commonly referred to as Asian pears. According to the national standard for Redwood, true rosewood must meet four key criteria: it must be from the genus Pterocarpus, have an average pore diameter of ≤200μm, display a reddish-brown to purple heartwood color, and have an air-dry density greater than 0.76g/cm³. Any wood that doesn’t meet these requirements—regardless of its origin—is considered an "Asian Pear."

Asian rosewood primarily comes from Africa. There are four common types: Angola red sandalwood, color-changing red sandalwood, African red sandalwood, and Anheuser red sandalwood. These are mainly found in tropical countries like Senegal and Guinea-Bissau. It's worth noting that while some African Pterocarpus species may have an air-dry density above 0.76g/cm³ and qualify as rosewood, many Southeast Asian Pterocarpus species may not meet this threshold. Even though they come from "premium" regions, they still fall short of the rosewood standard and are labeled as "Asian Pears."

In China, three types of "Asian Pears" are most commonly used: Angola rosewood, African rosewood, and Anshui rosewood. Angola rosewood has a varied heartwood color, ranging from brown to purple-brown, sometimes with dark streaks. The grain on the tangential cut is not very pronounced, and it has a mild fragrance. Its air-dry density ranges between 0.51 and 0.72 g/cm³. African red sandalwood, also known as African red pear, has a vibrant red heartwood when freshly cut, which turns purple-brown over time. It has a sweet, creamy aroma and an air-dry density of around 0.72g/cm³. Anshui rosewood, on the other hand, features bold and unique patterns resembling the "ghost face" of Huanghuali. Because it originates from Africa, it’s often called "African Pear" in the market. However, it has a strong, unpleasant odor, which sets it apart from other woods.

Although some of these materials don't meet the strict definition of genuine rosewood, they are still highly suitable for everyday furniture. The first two types offer a pleasant scent and attractive color, making them good choices for general use. The third one, while less appealing in terms of smell, offers striking patterns that can rival those of Huanghuali. From a cost-performance perspective, they have a clear advantage in the market.

There are only five genera, eight species, and 33 types of true redwood. As resources become scarcer, we may soon enter the post-redwood era. In that time, "Asian Pears" could gain more recognition and value. With traditional rosewood becoming rarer and more expensive, these alternative woods may become more popular among consumers looking for affordable yet visually appealing options.
