"Flying the fly" Amoy furniture, you are not following?

In recent years, a growing number of homeowners have started to explore the idea of "flying" to other cities to purchase furniture. While buying from Taobao or Tmall is convenient, some are choosing to go further—especially to Guangdong, where furniture manufacturing is more advanced and cost-effective. For example, in Nanjing, many homeowners are now planning to travel to Guangdong to buy furniture for their newly renovated homes. But how do they ensure quality, transportation, and delivery? We spoke with experienced owners and experts to find out.

Owner Experience

130,000 RMB for Custom Solid Wood Furniture

Netizen "Kitten" bought a new house in April 2013 and started renovating it in 2014. During the renovation process, she decided to look into buying furniture in Guangdong. “I was on a business trip to Foshan’s Lecong area, and I was amazed by the variety of furniture there. It was much larger than what we have in Nanjing, and since it's mostly wholesale, the prices were significantly lower,” she said. With the help of friends in Guangdong, she was advised to visit factories directly instead of the market. “It’s better to go to the factory to customize your furniture. You can see the materials and design exactly as you want,” her friend suggested.

With that guidance, Kitten contacted a furniture factory in Shenzhen through a friend. After several rounds of communication via QQ and phone calls, she got a good understanding of the factory. “This factory has been producing OEM for big brands for over ten years. They offer sample customization and even send paint samples to customers before placing an order, which gives a more realistic experience,” she explained.

She then traveled to Shenzhen to meet the factory. The scale of the facility impressed her, and the showroom had high-quality samples. Based on her family’s floor plan and design renderings, the factory designer recommended a full set of American solid wood handmade furniture, including beds, bookshelves, wardrobes, and sofas. After some negotiation, Kitten finalized the deal at around 130,000 RMB, adding two extra pieces to the order.

“In Nanjing, I could buy solid wood furniture, but it was expensive and the quality wasn’t as good as what I saw in the factory,” she said. “At the factory, I could see the raw materials and technology, making it more cost-effective. Plus, the designs available there were much more diverse than in Nanjing.”

Excellent Craftsmanship and Quality

After returning to Nanjing, the factory sent a sample of the finished furniture. Although only a few pieces arrived, the color and finish were impressive. “My home has a peacock blue section, and this color required a lot of skill. The craftsmanship here is excellent—it matches exactly what I wanted,” she said.

Kitten paid half of the total cost upfront and waited for the rest of the order. Two months later, the factory called again, saying the prototype was ready. She made another trip to Shenzhen to inspect the unfinished furniture. “The craftsmanship was amazing—especially the carvings on the American-style furniture. Every detail was hand-carved, and the edges were smooth and rounded,” she noted.

This time, she paid the full amount and signed the delivery agreement. A month later, the furniture was delivered. The factory arranged for a truck to transport everything to a logistics base in Nanjing, which took two days. Kitten received the furniture, and most of it was already assembled, making the process very hassle-free. The packaging was also well done, ensuring no damage during transit.

“The total cost for two trips to Guangdong, including flights and meals, was about 6,000 RMB. Adding the furniture and shipping, the total came to nearly 140,000 RMB. In Nanjing, I wouldn’t have been able to get such a complete set of furniture for that price,” she said. “I did a lot of research, but the final result was worth it. My neighbors who saw my house were all very impressed, and some even asked me for advice. They’re planning to go to Shenzhen themselves next.”

Meng Fanfeng, director of East Yi Risheng, shared his insights. “Guangdong is the largest furniture production base in China. Buying furniture there can save money, but not everyone has the chance. If something gets damaged during transportation, it can be hard to hold the factory accountable,” he said. “Many homeowners are now organizing trips to Guangdong to buy furniture. However, they need to be careful. Lecong is a distribution center with lower-end products, while Dongguan and Shenzhen are where high-end factories are located. Many of them produce for major brands, offering both custom and branded options at up to 20-30% lower prices than malls.”

Meng also highlighted the additional costs involved. “Besides the travel and accommodation expenses, transportation can cost several thousand yuan. Some furniture requires assembly, which adds to the cost. Overall, these three expenses can add up to around 10,000 RMB. So if you're not buying a full set of furniture, it might not be worth the trip.”

“When buying from a mall, there's a risk of receiving low-quality boards. But when you go to the factory, you can see the materials and styles firsthand, reducing the risk significantly,” Meng advised. “If you're going to Guangdong to buy furniture, it’s wise to purchase insurance. Even if the factory signs an after-sales agreement, if the furniture gets damaged during delivery, it’s hard to get compensation. Insurance helps protect against that.”
