Over the bank holiday, we decided to take advantage of the long weekend and get creative with the kids. Since all three girls are huge fans of Minions, we thought it would be fun to make some personalized Minion-themed cards for upcoming birthdays. The girls loved the idea, and it seemed like the perfect activity to keep them entertained.
To start, we gathered our supplies: red cardstock for the background (it really makes the Minions pop), yellow and blue paint for their iconic outfits, and purple for the evil minion. Acrylic paint worked best because it’s vibrant and stays on well, though it’s a bit tricky to clean off afterward—so younger kids might need supervision or help. We also grabbed googly eyes and felt-tip pens for the finishing touches.
The first step was using our fingers to create the Minions! We dipped them in yellow paint and pressed them onto the paper to form the bodies. For the evil minion, we used purple paint instead. Once those dried, we used a smaller finger to press blue paint onto the lower half of each Minion to create their overalls. It was messy but super fun, and the girls got a kick out of seeing their prints turn into characters they love.
After everything dried, we added the finer details with markers and attached the googly eyes. To make things easier, especially since the eyes were small, we used a toothpick to apply the glue. The girls had so much fun decorating their Minions however they wanted. Some painted theirs with polka dots, stripes, or even gave them different expressions—none of them looked exactly like the movie characters, but that’s what made it special!
One of my twin daughters decided to paint half her minions blue and the other half yellow, which turned out adorable. And, naturally, one of the cards ended up backward—it just added to the charm! For an extra touch, we wrote the pun "One in a Minion" at the bottom of each card.
Looking back, this project was such a hit with the kids. It wasn’t just about creating something beautiful; it was about letting their creativity shine through. Even though some of the designs weren’t "perfect," they’re definitely going to be cherished by the recipients.
If you're thinking of trying this with your own kids, I’d recommend it! It’s a great way to bond and get them excited about art. Plus, it’s always nice to have handmade cards ready for any occasion.
P.S. Pin this for later if you think you’ll give it a try—you won’t regret it!
