In recent days, a fake 2B pencil has sparked concerns among students and parents as it reportedly caused test scores to drop. The incident quickly spread on Weibo, drawing widespread attention from candidates and their families. Many home-based students are now worried about purchasing counterfeit 2B pencils, fearing that they might negatively impact their exam results.
According to reports on Weibo, the China Pen Association conducted tests on genuine and fake 2B pencils. When answering the same set of questions, the machine reading system gave a perfect score of 100 points for the real 2B pencil, while the fake one only scored 87 points. This raised the question: what is the difference between using different pencils in exams?
The card reader used in standardized tests only recognizes the graphite concentration of a 2B pencil. Pencils are categorized into 18 types based on the hardness of the graphite, ranging from 6B to 9H. Common Chinese pencils typically come in 13 grades, from darker to lighter. A representative from Zhonghua Pencil explained that the current standard for pencils follows GB/T 26698-2011, which specifies that pencils must meet the requirements for high-quality 2B pencils. However, professional card readers can only accurately recognize pencils with the correct 2B graphite concentration. If the lead is too dark or too light, it may result in errors or unreadable data.
The main component of a pencil is graphite, but other materials such as wood and paint are also involved. According to the staff at Zhonghua Pencil, genuine Chinese pencils adhere to strict standards regarding graphite concentration and hardness. Counterfeit 2B pencils often contain less graphite or are made with inferior materials, making them less readable by the machine and leading to lower scores. That’s why it’s recommended for students to purchase 2B pencils from regular supermarkets or department stores to ensure quality.
Another issue that could affect exam results is expired pencils. During a visit to several stationery stores, reporters found a wide variety of 2B pencils available, including wooden, automatic, and refillable sets, priced between 5 to 8 yuan. At a wholesale store in Shangdu, the owner claimed that all pencils were genuine, even if some had slight quality differences.
Ms. Qiu, a stationery shop owner near a primary school, mentioned that expired pencils could also cause problems. “It's hard to tell if a pencil is expired just by looking,†she said. According to national standards, the shelf life of special painting pencils is two years from the production date. They should be stored in dry, well-ventilated areas with temperatures between 0°C and 40°C and humidity not exceeding 80%. Genuine pencils usually have clear production dates and shelf-life information on the packaging, so students should check this before buying.
To help identify genuine 2B pencils, many merchants offer products with digital anti-counterfeiting technology. These sets come with a unique code that can be verified by scratching off the label. In addition, the first Chinese pencil company has provided tips for distinguishing real from fake pencils:
1. Check the logo: Compare multiple pencils. The "2B" markings on the three sides should align perfectly; jagged or uneven marks indicate a fake.
2. Examine the wood: Real pencils use eucalyptus wood that is moderately soft and has a dark red color. Fake pencils are often painted red on top, with white or light yellow wood inside, which tends to crack easily when sharpened.
3. Look at the print: Authentic pencils have fine, even printing. Fakes often have blurred or uneven text, with rough surfaces and blackened paint.
With these methods, students can better ensure they are using the right pencils during important exams. Always check the packaging for production dates and verify authenticity through official channels. After all, a small mistake in pencil choice could mean the difference between success and failure.
