Precautions and common problems in the use of liquid nitrogen tanks

Liquid nitrogen is a cryogenic substance widely used in biomedical research for preserving biological samples. However, many users often misuse it due to insufficient understanding of its properties and the proper handling of liquid nitrogen containers. This can lead to unnecessary waste, increased costs, and even serious accidents or injuries. To ensure safe and efficient use, here are some key considerations: First, there are two main types of liquid nitrogen tanks: storage tanks and transport tanks. Storage tanks are designed for stationary use in controlled indoor environments and should not be used for long-distance transportation. On the other hand, transport tanks are specifically engineered with shock-absorbing features to withstand movement during transit. These tanks can be used both for storage and transportation, but they must be handled carefully to avoid shocks and vibrations. Second, the tank's lid should never be completely sealed. Liquid nitrogen evaporates into gas as it warms, and if the container is tightly closed, pressure can build up and potentially cause an explosion. Most liquid nitrogen tanks are designed with a small gap on the lid to allow for safe gas release. It’s important not to block this opening manually. Third, when using liquid nitrogen, always take precautions. First, wear appropriate protective gear to avoid frostbite from direct contact. Second, when retrieving frozen samples, work quickly and gently to prevent thawing and damage. Third, ensure good ventilation in the workspace to prevent oxygen depletion, which can lead to suffocation. Fourth, since liquid nitrogen does not kill bacteria, always maintain hygiene and disinfect any surfaces or tools that come into contact with it. Lastly, secure the tank during transport to prevent tipping or shaking. Fourth, when storing liquid nitrogen for extended periods, monitor the level regularly. The liquid nitrogen should not fall below the level of the stored samples. You can check the level by weighing the tank or shining a flashlight through the container. Another method involves inserting a wooden stick or bamboo pole to measure the frost line, which corresponds to the liquid level. However, avoid using hollow tubes, as this could result in sudden liquid nitrogen discharge and potential injury. It is also recommended to clean and disinfect your liquid nitrogen tank annually. Before cleaning, rinse it with a neutral detergent and then wash with warm water (not exceeding 40°C). Allow the inner lining to dry completely before refilling with liquid nitrogen. Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safety of the tank.
