[China Packaging Network News] The core principle of modern wooden packaging emphasizes continuous improvement in performance and added value, with a strong focus on the role of wooden packaging. Beyond just protecting goods during transportation, it now serves as an aesthetic, convenient, and practical solution that enhances product value. As a natural and eco-friendly material, wooden packaging is energy-efficient and sustainable, contributing to a greener planet.
Since entering the 21st century, the function of wooden packaging has evolved significantly. Traditionally, packaging was mainly for transport and basic protection, but today's wooden packaging plays a more multifaceted role. It involves using wood materials to carry, wrap, and support goods. According to international trade requirements, all wood packaging must undergo treatment to eliminate pests. In China, heat treatment and methyl bromide fumigation are commonly used. However, due to the environmental damage caused by methyl bromide, heat treatment is becoming the preferred and safer method, gradually replacing its use in the market.
It is reported that the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine has officially stopped using the old markings specified in Order No. 69 and No. 84. Instead, the new logo follows the latest revision of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Standard No. 15, featuring six different designs. Companies applying for detoxification treatment labels must register the logos with local inspection and quarantine authorities. Once approved, they will receive new qualified labels. During registration, companies can choose one or multiple logo styles. Combined with the newly introduced anti-counterfeiting codes for wood packaging in China, this system helps prevent fraud effectively.
In addition to counterfeiting, pests remain a major threat to wooden packaging. Pine wood nematodes, classified as a second-class quarantine pest in China, pose a serious risk. These tiny organisms invade pine trees and cause pine wilt disease, which can kill a tree within six months. Known as the "number one dangerous pest" in forestry, they cause massive economic losses each year. The infestation has spread across regions like Jiangsu, Anhui, Shandong, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, making the situation critical.
The inspection and quarantine department advises import and export companies to clearly request foreign clients to ensure that wood packaging is properly treated and marked with the “IPPC†symbol. This ensures compliance with international standards and reduces the risk of pest introduction.
In 2014, issues surrounding wood packaging in international trade were frequent and challenging. However, today, the industry has made significant progress, and wood packaging is now considered safe and reliable. With improved regulations, effective treatments, and enhanced monitoring, the future of wooden packaging looks promising and secure.
