[China Packaging Network News] The fundamental principle of modern wooden packaging is centered on continuous improvement in packaging performance and added value, with a special emphasis on the multifaceted role of wooden packaging. Beyond just ensuring the safety of goods during transportation and protection, it also aims to enhance aesthetics, convenience, and practicality, thereby increasing the overall value of products. Wooden box packaging is not only resource-consuming but also eco-friendly, energy-efficient, and sustainable, contributing to a greener planet.
Since entering the 21st century, the role of wooden packaging has evolved significantly. Traditionally, packaging was mainly used for transport and basic product protection. However, modern wooden packaging now serves a broader purpose, including carrying, containing, and supporting goods. According to international trade regulations, all wood packaging used for exports must undergo treatment to eliminate pests. In China, the primary methods are heat treatment and methyl bromide fumigation. Due to the environmental harm caused by methyl bromide, heat treatment is becoming the preferred method, gradually replacing the outdated fumigation technique.
It has been reported that the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine has officially stopped using the old marking system from Order No. 69 and No. 84. Instead, a new logo based on the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Standard No. 15 has been introduced, featuring six different designs. Companies applying for the detoxification treatment labels must register the logos with local inspection agencies. Once approved, they will receive the updated treatment label along with a qualification certificate. During registration, companies can choose one or more logo styles, and when combined with China’s new anti-counterfeiting code for wood packaging, this helps prevent fraud effectively.
In addition to counterfeiting, insect infestation remains a major threat to wooden packaging. Among them, the pine wood nematode is classified as a second-class quarantine pest in China, banned from entry. It infects pine trees and causes pine wilt disease, leading to tree death within six months. Known as the "number one dangerous pest" in forestry, it is responsible for the highest economic losses due to its devastating impact. Currently, the nematode has spread across regions such as Jiangsu, Anhui, Shandong, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, creating a severe situation.
The inspection and quarantine authorities remind import and export companies to clearly request foreign clients to ensure their wooden packaging has undergone proper quarantine treatment and is marked with the “IPPC†logo.
In 2014, issues related to wooden packaging in international trade were widespread. Today, however, wooden packaging can confidently say: there are no problems with wooden packaging anymore!
