Human milk accelerates another myth in the fitness world

There are numerous types of milk available on the market, including cow’s milk, goat’s milk, and other animal milks, all marketed as nutritional supplements. However, many people still prefer breast milk, believing it to be the most natural and beneficial option. According to a report from the US-based website "odditycentral.com" on February 25, drinking breast milk has become a trending practice among bodybuilders, who claim it accelerates muscle growth. It is said that many fitness enthusiasts are convinced that consuming breast milk is one of the most effective ways to build muscle mass. Some even go to great lengths to obtain it. A quick Google search reveals that there are already numerous online forums and articles promoting the idea that breast milk is the ultimate source of nutrition. Some sites even go as far as claiming that breast milk is the best nutrition ever developed. Unsurprisingly, the growing demand for breast milk has created an opportunity for some mothers. Many young mothers are now selling their excess milk, either through online breast milk banks or directly on personal websites. Some can earn up to $1,200 per month (approximately 7,500 yuan), and while most platforms cater to babies, some have started offering breast milk specifically for adults. One such mother is Lisa, a young woman from Michigan, USA. She sells her breast milk online after learning from her cousin—someone into fitness—that many athletes use it to enhance muscle gain. She shared on her website: “I have a five-month-old baby, and I’ve been storing my extra milk. My fridge is full, and I don’t want to waste it. I don’t drink alcohol, take drugs, and I take a variety of vitamins every day.” Lisa mentioned that her cousin suggested adding breast milk to protein shakes, which she found to be similar in taste to regular milk but slightly sweeter. This led her to believe that it could be a valuable supplement for those looking to improve their physique. However, not everyone agrees with this trend. Some buyers remain anonymous, often calling to inquire about availability without revealing their identity. Supporters of the practice argue that breast milk contains hormones and nutrients that benefit both infants and adults. Others claim it helps with skin conditions, though most bodybuilders simply use it to make homemade yogurt. Despite these claims, not all bodybuilders are convinced. Austin, a fitness enthusiast, expressed surprise at the trend: “People want to get stronger and more muscular, but I’ve heard rumors about using breast milk to boost testosterone levels. It’s something I never expected to hear.” While breast milk is undeniably beneficial for newborns, there is no scientific evidence supporting its benefits for adults. Joanne Ransom, medical director of the Northwestern Mother’s Breast Bank, warned against purchasing breast milk online. She pointed out that milk bought through unregulated channels may carry harmful viruses like HIV. In the U.S., the sale of breast milk online is actually illegal due to lack of oversight and potential health risks.
