Porsche is widely known as a luxury car brand, but for many, it has also come to symbolize excellence in craftsmanship and design. This perception extends beyond automobiles, as seen in the Porsche-branded bracelet designed by renowned Dutch designer Gijs Bakker. The piece belongs to the *Sense of Wonder* collection, launched by the jewelry brand chp..?, which challenges designers to think beyond traditional materials and functions, redefining how industrial jewelry is created.
The goal of the chp..? brand, co-founded by Bakker and Italian gallery owner Marijke Vallanzasca, is to explore the artistic potential of new technologies—materials, techniques, and craftsmanship. However, they emphasize that technology should not be forced upon designers simply because of tradition. Instead, the focus is on creating pieces that evoke a sense of wonder and surprise, serving as a form of communication that captivates and intrigues.
This approach aligns with Bakker’s ongoing exploration of how men and women respond differently to design. He believes that women are often drawn to jewelry, while men may be more attracted to visual symbols like cars. His work reflects this idea through a brooch that merges the image of a car with precious stones—appealing to both genders through different elements.
In response to chp..?'s call, Bakker designed a Porsche-themed bracelet that can be worn by both men and women, though in different sizes. The first version was made using 3D-printed molds with clear blue plastic resin. Later, with the advancement of metal 3D printing technology, the latest iteration was crafted from black, scratch-resistant chrome.
For Bakker, the use of 3D printing in this project was an experiment in itself. While 3D printing is often associated with male-dominated industries, and jewelry tends to be more popular among women, he aimed to bridge that gap. By incorporating the Porsche image, he created a piece that appeals to a broader audience, challenging traditional gender norms in design.
Gijs Bakker is a leading figure in contemporary Dutch design, recognized as a national treasure and a key proponent of postmodernism. Starting as a jewelry designer, he has expanded his work across various fields, including product design, home accessories, furniture, interior design, and even public spaces. Through his work, he has helped bring Dutch design to a global stage. To truly understand Dutch design, one must grasp the concept of conceptual design—and that means understanding Gijs Bakker and his contributions, such as his role in founding Droog Design.
