In recent days, as China's economy continues to show signs of recovery, many enterprises have expressed optimism about the potential for explosive growth in the domestic high-end furniture market. To capture this emerging opportunity, furniture companies in Foshan have been extremely active, especially with the recent launch of four major furniture exhibitions in South China.
The past few days have been a whirlwind for local furniture firms. During interviews conducted by reporters, it became clear that numerous companies were preparing aggressively for the exhibitions, aiming to showcase their latest designs and products in order to secure more orders. The atmosphere was charged with energy and anticipation.
Experts believe that the release of domestic high-end consumer demand is on the horizon. According to Zhou Weixin, chairman of Xinshida Furniture, the furniture market is expected to see significant changes this year, driven largely by high-income consumers in first-tier cities. He noted that during the financial crisis, many white-collar workers and affluent individuals refrained from spending. However, with the economic situation improving, pent-up demand for mid- to high-end furniture is expected to surge, leading to substantial growth in the luxury furniture sector.
Innovation has also become a key driver for companies looking to expand their presence in the domestic market. For example, Valentia Furniture Co., Ltd. showcased groundbreaking products such as the world’s first negative ion purification bed and an Italian high-end soft bed at the exhibition. The company aims to dominate the top end of the market. Its general manager, Zhou Zhenyang, projected a 50% year-on-year increase in sales for 2010.
While the domestic market presents promising opportunities, international markets also bring both challenges and possibilities. Many Shunde-based furniture exporters are optimistic about the global recovery, with European, American, ASEAN, Middle Eastern, and Eastern European markets showing varying degrees of growth.
However, the situation in developed regions like the U.S. and Europe remains challenging. Trade barriers and technical regulations are becoming more stringent, making it harder for Chinese furniture to penetrate these markets. Ding Zhijun, overseas marketing director of a panel furniture company, pointed out that new regulations such as the EU Wood and Wood Products Regulation and the revised Lacey Act in the U.S. are putting pressure on domestic producers.
Zhou Zhenyang also acknowledged that the export industry remained stable last year, partly due to increased export tax rebates. He emphasized the need for Chinese furniture companies to focus on product quality, design, and actively respond to anti-dumping investigations and green trade barriers rather than retreating.
Another concern for companies is the appreciation of the RMB. Zhou Weixin warned that developed countries, including the U.S., may push for a stronger yuan this year, which could negatively impact exports. He predicted that while markets in Eastern Europe and the Middle East will grow rapidly, exporting to developed economies like the U.S. will become increasingly difficult.
