Borouge, a joint venture between Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Borealis, leverages Borstar’s patented technology and over 50 years of expertise in polyolefins to support critical industries such as infrastructure, automotive, and advanced packaging. Their innovative solutions, including Borstar and BNT nucleation technologies, are widely used in films, fibers, thermoformed products, and even injection and blow molding applications. These technologies help drive innovation in plastic bottle packaging, caps, thin-walled containers, transport packaging, and household goods. By combining cutting-edge technology with world-class innovation, Borouge is shaping the future of everyday life.
In the beverage sector, there has been a growing emphasis on sustainable and efficient packaging solutions. Companies are focusing on reducing unnecessary material use to minimize waste and lower carbon footprints while maintaining product quality and performance. Packaging remains essential for protecting food and extending shelf life, even when using less material. As a leader in value-added plastic solutions, Borouge addresses these challenges by offering sensory HDPE beverage closures and shrink film solutions that enhance both functionality and sustainability.
One of the key innovations from Borouge is the shift toward lightweight, standard short-neck sealing caps, which have gained popularity in the global beverage market. To meet this demand, Borouge introduced two advanced materials—BorPure MB5568 and MB5569—within its BorPure™ high-density polyethylene (HDPE) family. These materials are ideal for carbonated drinks, teas, and juices. While MB5568 is free of slip aids, MB5569 includes them to ensure optimal torque performance.
Thanks to the enhanced design capabilities of Borstar polymers, the multi-peak sensory HDPE materials in the BorPure family have already demonstrated excellent environmental cracking resistance. The new MB5568/9 materials have improved ESCR by 50% and hardness by 10%, making them even more durable and functional.
In terms of flowability and processability, BorPure MB5568/9 is comparable to unimodal MFR2 HDPE resins, ensuring consistent appearance and performance for end users while allowing further weight reduction. Additionally, these materials do not impart any odor to bottles, ensuring batch-to-batch quality consistency.
The rise of BorPure MB5568/9 reflects a broader trend in the beverage industry, where brand owners aim to reduce preform weight from the start. In 2006, the International Beverage Technology Association introduced the PCO1881 standard, promoting lightweight, short-necked caps that cut weight by 20–30%. This shift also includes moving from two-piece PP seals to single-piece HDPE seals, which save material and cost without compromising seal integrity or barrier properties.
Borouge’s BorPure MB5568/9 materials provide the perfect balance of lightweight design and performance, thanks to the unique Borstar technology platform. This innovation not only meets the needs of the beverage industry but also supports sustainable development and enhances product competitiveness. Alongside these advancements, Borouge continues to offer efficient bundled packaging shrink film solutions tailored for the beverage sector, reinforcing its role as a key player in driving industry progress.
