Recently, on the RC Groups online forum, a passionate 3D printing enthusiast named Harcoreta shared an incredible achievement — a detailed simulation of a General Electric (GE) turbofan jet engine, which was 3D printed and used on a model Boeing 787. This is not just a static replica; it's a fully functional scale model that accurately mimics the internal and external structure of a real jet engine. What stands out is that all 60 fixed and movable blades were crafted by Harcoreta using a desktop 3D printer, showcasing remarkable precision and dedication.
What’s even more exciting is that this 3D-printed engine is now available for use! Harcoreta's next goal is to install it onto a model airplane, taking his project to the next level.
Printing such a complex aero engine model is no small feat, especially with a consumer-grade 3D printer. This project proves how much can be achieved when someone is truly committed to their creative vision. It's a testament to patience, skill, and passion.
Harcoreta is a well-known member of the RC Groups community, often sharing innovative 3D-printed models. He previously created a small EDF (electric ducted fan) engine, but soon after, he set his sights on a larger and more complex aero engine. The project was temporarily paused for a year, but Harcoreta eventually revived it with the intention of testing it on a Bixler model aircraft. He admits that the majority of his time went into the 3D printing and assembly process, rather than just the design. His design also includes a reverse thruster system, allowing the remote-controlled plane to decelerate effectively. According to the China 3D Printing Network, Harcoreta is preparing for the first test of this 3D-printed engine soon.
The technical specifications of this 3D-printed GE GEnx-1B engine include:
- Main fan with 18 blades, diameter of 100 mm
- 24 outlet guide vanes
- 18 internal turbine blades, 34 mm in diameter
- Reverse thruster with translation fairing, blocking door, and cascade
- NTM 1400kv motor, 35 mm in size
- Thrust target over 0.5 kg, compatible with 3S or 4S batteries
- Simplified engine hanger
- Exhaust area slightly reduced, about 95% of the original FSA
While there have been many impressive 3D-printed projects from enthusiasts around the world — including 3D-printed Toyota engines and solar-powered drones — Harcoreta’s jet engine represents a major leap forward. His work not only demonstrates the potential of 3D printing in aviation modeling but also inspires others to push the limits of what’s possible.
