Wutai Mountain, located in Wutai County, Lüzhou City, Shanxi Province, is one of the four sacred Buddhist mountains in China. Known for its five peaks, the mountain is named after its flat summit, with the highest peak being Beitai at 3,058 meters and the lowest, Nantai, at 2,485 meters. The area is also called Qingliang Mountain due to its consistently cool climate, with an average annual temperature of -4°C. In January, temperatures can drop as low as -18.8°C, while July and August are the warmest months, averaging around 9°C. The best time for hiking is between March and September, though the weather can be unpredictable, with sudden rain, wind, and even snow—especially in June, when such conditions are rare.
The typical hiking route starts from Hongmenyan and ascends through the five main peaks: Dongtai, Beitai, Zhongtai, Xitai, and Nantai, before descending into Taihuai Town. Most hikers complete the trail in two days, covering approximately 55 kilometers with a moderate intensity level (around 1.5). Due to the variable weather, it's essential to prepare for all conditions, including cold, rain, wind, and sun exposure.
For clothing, a high-quality waterproof jacket is a must. Brands like Patagonia or Columbia offer excellent protection against sudden changes in weather. A down jacket is also essential, especially for early mornings and evenings, with a 300-gram fill being sufficient for June’s cooler temperatures. Quick-drying clothes are recommended for daytime hikes, while fleece layers can help manage temperature fluctuations. It's important to pack extra layers and avoid wearing too much at once.
Footwear should include sturdy hiking boots with good support. Brands like Lowa or Sorel are ideal for long treks, as they provide comfort and reduce fatigue on uneven terrain. Wool socks are crucial for preventing blisters, and it's wise to carry a spare pair. A reliable backpack, ideally between 35-45 liters, with good ventilation and a secure load system, is essential for carrying all your gear comfortably.
Other essentials include a raincoat with a backpack compartment, trekking poles to reduce strain on your knees, and a headlamp for emergencies. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses protect against UV rays, while gloves keep hands warm in cold or windy conditions. A satellite phone, such as the LT-6100PLUS, is highly recommended due to the lack of cellular signal in many areas. With proper preparation, a hike on Wutai Mountain can be both challenging and incredibly rewarding.
