When a plastic running track needs to be renovated, it's usually due to two main reasons. The first is when the track has reached the end of its service life and can no longer provide a safe and effective surface for athletes or users. Continuing to use it could lead to injuries or other safety hazards. The second reason is damage caused by improper usage, such as heavy pressure from equipment, accidental burns from cigarette butts, or even intentional vandalism. These types of damages can significantly reduce the lifespan and performance of the track.
Before starting the renovation process, professionals will inspect the site to assess the extent of the damage. Minor issues may only require resurfacing, while more severe damage might necessitate rebuilding the base layer. The renovation process typically involves several key steps:
First, the site must be thoroughly cleaned. This includes sweeping away dirt, removing any loose material with a spatula, and using high-pressure water to flush out debris. Nearby trees should be pruned to prevent leaves from falling onto the work area, and the site should be closed off to avoid unnecessary foot traffic.
Next comes the repair phase. Damaged areas are identified and treated using specialized tools. A single-component adhesive is applied to seal the base, and then filled with a brush or scraper. It’s important to mix materials carefully, following specific ratios and timing to ensure proper adhesion. The mixing area should be protected with tape or plastic sheeting to prevent contamination.
After repairs, the entire track is coated with a new layer of material. This involves preparing the site, ensuring all tools and machinery are in good working order, and accurately measuring raw materials based on the area to be covered. Once the mixture is ready, it is sprayed evenly across the surface, ensuring a thickness of at least 1.5mm per layer.
The final step is marking the track according to international standards, such as those set by IAAF. This includes rechecking original positioning markers, cleaning the surface, and applying clear, precise lines using special polyurethane paint. The markings must be sharp, even, and free of seams or irregularities.
Once the renovation is complete, the track should be left undisturbed for 7–10 days before being used again. After delivery, the construction team will also provide a maintenance manual to the client, ensuring long-term care and performance of the track.
