University of California studies the mysteries of the universe through 3D printing technology

Miguel Aragón-Calvo is a visiting assistant research institute in the astronomy and physics department of the school. He has been engaged in the study of cosmic formation for a long time. Currently, he is trying to understand the galaxies and their position in the "cosmic web."
"The galaxies are not isolated objects," he said. “They are connected by a “wire†of gas and matter. These gases are ejected through the “silk†in the galaxy. Prior to this, he had been using computer simulation techniques to study these structures, and even complicated computer technology could not give him an accurate sense of the structure of galaxies and other cosmic celestial bodies. So he began to add his own 2D simulation results, plus the time dimension, and printed it in 3D, which eventually led to some very interesting findings. For example, in a 3D printed spherical galaxies, Aragón-Calvo saw the distortion of the "wire" as it entered the galaxy, a phenomenon he had never seen before.
"Even with computer graphics technology, these cosmological problems are often difficult to visualize," he said. “And with 3D printing I can interact directly with the model and “see†the problem at once. In some cases, this will lead to a sudden discovery. If the universe of the three latitudes takes time as another spatial variable, It's easy to identify and track as a four-dimensional object. Although I can visualize the universe multiple times in front of the computer screen, the solution is clear in my mind only when the model is in the hand." Aragón-Calvo It is said that through the 3D model, the interaction of cosmic elements becomes easier to understand at once.
“I often “play†some 3D models of early stage galaxies to get inspiration about how gas is injected into it to produce stars.†Aragón-Calvo said: “This helps me when I research and develop galaxies to form models. The paper will be submitted to the relevant magazine soon."
